Whether you are thinking of starting a career in design or see design as a hobby, there are a couple of things you need to know. Although starting something new can be a daunting experience, more often than not, it ends up going really well. We are here to make sure you start your design journey right and push yourself to produce the best artwork you are capable of.
1- Let’s start with the most obvious tip, do what you love! Start with a design that you know and love. Nothing will boost your performance as well as working on a project you feel strongly about and from there you will be able to move on to less familiar concepts with the knowledge gained from the first piece.
2- Next, you will need to remember to pay attention to detail. Precision is key when designing, no aspect of design can be rushed or overlooked. Every single detail counts. Being detail oriented can sometimes come in the way of your everyday life. Here, however, that will be your number one strength. Tackling a new project can feel overwhelming, being well organised and having an eye for detail will help you not only get through it, but will make you produce an amazing result.
3- Having said that, don’t be afraid to make mistakes and remember to seek advice from more experienced designers. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect! You will find that the of the most efficient way to know what works for you is to eliminate what doesn’t work. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask for advice, your fellow designers will be more than happy to help! Remember that everyone of them have been in the same position before.
4- Although you might sometimes feel like you want to show off all your skills, remember that less is more. Not having an objective eye on your projects means that sometimes you will need to take a break and come back hours later to realise that your design is not as clear and easy to understand as you might have thought. It is key for your design to be easily identifiable and for the message to come through immediately. Overcrowding it with too many styles will confuse the viewers and will prevent your artwork from standing out.
5- Last but not least, don’t be afraid to be different! Your point of view is unique, make sure that comes through in your design. What makes your design unique is what makes it memorable, don’t be afraid to be yourself. Having said that, it is also important to be consistent. Being different is not synonym to being messy. What makes you stand out should be your ability to create a breathtaking piece, not your inconsistency.
We hope this has given you a clearer idea of how to start your design journey and that by applying all of these tips you will develop your style as well as your technique.
